A CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF KANT’S PHILOSOPHY IN RELATION TO NIGERIAN SOCIETY

ABSTRACT

Ethics and morality are two aspects of the same reality that aims at enhancing the peaceful harmonious and lawful human societies. But unlike ethics that tries to prescribe what ought to be the ideal way to behave as well as appropriate sanction for any wrong action; morality tends to be dependent on the right judgement of the reason as well as ones willingness to do good and avoid evil.

Hence, it is this peculiar feature of morality that makes it difficult for most individuals in the society to view action and as it were act according to the naturally kind direction of the reason. This is why Kant in his moral theory expounded on such concepts as the categorical imperative and the universalization principle or maxim which instructs that one should act in such a way that the maxim of his action will become a universal law. It is also on these bases that the researcher concluded that the high rate of moral decadence in Nigerian will be nipped in the bud if, Nigerians began to appreciate Kant’s doctrines.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

 1.1     Background Of The Study

The guest for a morally just oriented society has been the guest of different human societies ranging from the time of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Karl Marx, the social contracterians and even the scholastic philosophers. In our contemporary society, this quest has remained so fervent that every philosophical exercise or write up tends to toe the line of moral recommendations. A good example is the numerous articles, papers and seminars that have been carried out in Nigeria to promote the moral standard of the society.

A CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF KANT’S PHILOSOPHY IN RELATION TO NIGERIAN SOCIETY

However, in prescribing the moral theory that supposed to serve as an examplar to the lives, modes of behaviours, cultures and notion of values in our society, it is important to make reference to the moral theory of such notable philosophers as Kant who has reflected humanistically on the aspect of morality in our societies. Kant in his moral theory presented a kind of principle that has bearing with both the laws of nature and the moral doctrines of both the Christians and every other religion that promotes the sanctity of human life. Kant in his moral theory talked about the categorical imperative which has it that one should act in such a way that the maxim of his action can become a universal law; thereby reaffirming the natural law that you should do unto others the way you will have them do unto you. And this captures the need for uprightness, probity and singleness of purpose in man’s activities.

It follows from the positions of Kant stated above that, the society will experience more peace, love, harmony and development when the moral indignation to do good and avoid evil is appealed to by every body in the society. Hence, why the different epoche of human society have noticed a lot of immorality and moral decadence is because men has decided to appeal more to their egocentric disposition than to the ditum of performing an action because of its moral obligation, which is the bases of morality in Kant and an ideal societies. To turn man to this universal maxim of good conduct is the driving force motivating this research.

1.2     Statement Of The Problem

In the daily and societal relationship between individuals in the society, people have shown their neighbours all sorts of immoral and wicked act which shows that human society is fast being elusive of morality. egocentricism, “the end justifies the means”, shortcuts and corrupt practices have replaced the natural need for justice, communalism, equity and transparency. Nobody now performs actions for the sake of their moral obligation, our natural inclination and benefits has becomes the arche of all our actions. The persistence of these evils has really called for an urgent need to appraise a moral theory that will satisfy the society’s guest for a good moral order. In doing this, the researcher will attempt to answer such questions as what is morality? What relationship does it have with the development of human society? How can Kant’s moral theory help in promoting the moral needs of the society?, there are some of the questions that will help to establish the goals of this study.
