Relevance of educational resources in teaching of English Language among JSS II students in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the study

Educational resources are educational inputs which are of vital importance to the teaching of any subject in the school curriculum. Wales (2000) was of the opinion that the use of Educational resources would make discovered facts retain in the memory of students. Savoury (2002) also added that, a well-planned and imaginative use of visual aids in lessons should do much to banish apathy, supplement inadequacy of books as well as arouse students’ interest by giving them something practical to see and do, and at the same time help to train them to think things out themselves. Furthermore, a catalogue of useful visual aids good enough for teaching include pictures, post cards, diagrams, maps, filmstrips and models.

He also stated that selection of materials which are related to the basic contents of a course or a lesson, helps in-depth understanding of such a lesson by the students in that they make the lesson attractive to them, thereby arresting their attention and thus, motivating them to learn. It is also very vital to have sufficient and adequate human resources in terms of teacher quality for the teaching of all subjects in the school curriculum. Without the teachers as implementing factors, the goals of education can never be achieved. In order to achieve a just and egalitarian society as spelt out in the Nigerian National Policy of Education (2004), schools should be properly and uniformly equipped to promote sound and effective teaching. Suitable textbooks, qualified teachers, libraries which are adequate should also be provided for schools. Scarcity of these, according to Coombs (2005), will constraint educational system from responding more fully to new demands. In order to raise the quality of education, its efficiency and productivity, better learning materials are needed. Knezewich (2007) also stressed the importance of having appropriate personnel plan and adequate physical facilities to support educational effort.

The history of the English language in Nigeria dates back to 16th Century, long before missionary activities and colonial power (Adetugbo, 2001; Banjo, 1999). The first contact is recorded in the coastal areas such as Calabar, Warri and Brass. English language was brought by English sailors who came to replace the Portuguese as the dominant traders in the West coast of Africa. It is from this contact that Pidgin English originated. What we refer to as Standard English today institutionally came to be taught to Nigerians in the middle of the 19th Century, about 300 years later (Kassal, 2000, Akeredolu-Ale, 2007).

English became the official language of Nigeria when all its regions were amalgamated as one political entity at the beginning of the 20th Century. The quality of English teaching and learning from this time till about the 2000s was remarkably characterized by adequate competence on the part of teachers and learners alike. This is partly because of the high premium placed on the language as a result of its utility value, as well as the opportunities it provided as a window to the world and to white collar jobs. It also served as a vehicle of inter-ethnic and cross-cultural communication in a multilingual setting in Nigeria. The proficiency level by students at the end of secondary school, as well as the high quality of their spoken and written English, reflected a positive disposition to the teaching and learning of English. English was also mastered by its users in the mass media, in the conduct of government administration, in commerce and in social interactions, particularly among an expanding middle class who use it as a lingua franca (Akeredolu-Ale, 2007).

From the forgoing, this study is geared towards ascertaining the relevance of educational resources in teaching of English Language in JSS II students in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Statement of the problem

The use of Educational resources in teaching of English language has been widely researched but many questions still remains unanswered. The need for exploring locally available resources in our schools, resourcefulness of the teacher must be in line with the learners’ curriculum and environment so that classroom teaching does have to be retarded by lack of funds. The problems are that; Educational resources are not adequately provided in our schools, teachers do not improvise and hence reluctant in making use of them.

 Purpose of the study

This study is set to find out the relevance of educational resources in teaching of English Language among JSS II students using Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State as a study. Specifically, it seeks to:

  1. Determine the importance of educational resources on effective teaching of English Language.
  2. Ascertain the extent the utilization of educational resources help the English language teachers in achieving the class objective.
  3. Find how the use of Educational resources can promote effective teaching of English Language.
  4. Ascertain the extent educational resources will help in improving the academic performance of the students.

Significance of the study

The findings of this study will be useful to the teachers, students, employers of labours, ministry of education, school administrators and the nation at large. These will enable the teachers to improve on their method of teaching and strategies which in turn motivates the students during classroom activities. To the students, the use of Educational resources in the teaching of English Language will act as a motivating factor for them to put their interest in English Language classes.

The employers of labour will be enabled to benefit from their employees in the aspect of English Language both in reading and writing. While the curriculum planners will be helped to put in place those missing link in the use of Educational resources and fill in the gap during curriculum planning. And on the part of the ministry of education as well as the school administrator the outcome of this study can help them discover and understand the importance of educational resources and at the same time make it as a law for all the teachers of English language to start using educational resources being provided by the government and the school.

Research questions

The following research questions guided the study:

  1. What are the importance of educational resources on effective teaching of English Language?
  2. To what extent does utilization of educational resources help the English language teachers in achieving the class objective?
  3. How does the use of Educational resources promote effective teaching of English Language?
  4. To what extent will educational resources improve the academic performance of the students?

Scope of the study

This study is focused mainly on the relevance of educational resources in teaching of English Language in JSS II students in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. Hence, this study shall be restricted to JSS II students in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
