PROJECT TOPIC- SPORTS PARTICIPATION AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SOME SELLECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN EZZA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

The learning of sport in Nigeria, started right from when the first parent taught his son how to till the soil, throw the spear, climb a tree and even some special events like hunting, craft making etc. Over the centuries, the civilized social scene in sport has changed tremendously, even ways of living have profoundly changed, and new ideas have pressed upon the old pattern of life.

This was reinforced when Ekeh (2003) quoting Edward (1973) defined sports as: Activities having recorded histories and tradition stressing physical exertion through competition within limits in explicit and formal rules governing roles and relationships and carried out by individuals who represents formally organised groups having the goal of achieving valves tangibles or intangibles through defeating opposing groups.

It is rather an unfortunate heritage of sport for people to conceive of its programme in physical terms alone just because its activities are obviously physical. But with the introduction of exercise physiology in which wholesomeness of the individual is the underlying factor, sport became the education of the whole person.

With this few operative, sport has concern for and with academic performance, which include emotional responses, personal relationship, group behaviour, mental learning and other intellectual social and aesthetic outcomes. Edward (1973) attested to this when he said  that “patriotism and friendship can be achieved through sports but this is not automatic”.

There is no doubt that sports when well organized provides excellent opportunities for the participant to develop physically, mentally, socially and morally. It is therefore myopic to limit ones objective to sports and physically outcomes alone. To balance the harmony sought by the ancient Greeks is in modern terms, an education of the whole person in which the physical takes its proper place in the unfolding element of man’s academic pursuits.

Civilized societies have always felt the need for sports participation as an education pursuit for its citizens. In developed countries like Britain, America and Russia etc, citizens take sports as an academic pursuit to attain fame, honour, wealth, higher social status and academic heights. Today, sports have gained popularity in all countries of the world, including Nigeria.

It has become a tool for political and social identification both in national and international circles. In the schools in Ezza, sports have been an integral part of academic life of the school community. There is the annual inter house or zonal competition which has always been very keenly competed, they participate very enthusiastically and the outcome has always been very rewarding.

After all, the most effective method of teaching is through sports that are “the play method” a method by which play is employed as a means of transmission of knowledge. Therefore, a competitive sport which is a highly organized form of academic performance is necessary for normal well-being. In conclusion, sport is a great mixer. It mixes well with science and medicine.

It goes well with politics. It combines inseparably with education, and twin sister of culture. Socially, sports are the very centre of life. One cannot ignore sports without causing harm to normal psychological development. This as it may be within some social circles, majority still regard sports as a discipline for the less intellectual and dunces.

This notion perhaps is because of the old saying that “old ideas and theories die hard” it is on the basis of this that this work will examine the relationship between sports participation and academic performance in some selected secondary schools in Ezza local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

PROJECT TOPIC- SPORTS PARTICIPATION AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SOME SELLECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN EZZA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

Statement of the problem

It appears that what is in the minds of most students is basically the question of sports as a leisure time activity and not as a contributor to academics. Since sports boys and girls are always engaged in the practical aspect of sports, they hardly take their academic aspect serious. I shall first attempt an interpretative study of sports participation and academic performance with a view to establishing its

relevance in Ezza community. More so, most sports stars around us are not academicians, therefore, it is assumed that sports is mainly for the never do wells and dunces, hence the statement of problem, sport participation and academic performance of students of Ezza Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Purpose of the study

The purpose of the study as to determine sports participation and academic performance in some selected secondary schools in Ezza Local Government of Ebonyi State. The study will be guided by the following objectives:

  1. To determine whether student’s participation in sporting activities hinder academic performance.
  2. To determine whether students who participate in sports have no time to attend classes.
  3. To determine whether participation in sports exposes students to anti-social activities like drug usage which are inimical to mental activities?
  4. To determine whether there are any significant differences between the academic performance of athletes and non-athletes.
  5. To determine whether sports participation and practical reduce students energies to pursue their academic work.

Significance of the study

As a result of the common opinion that sports are a leisure time activity and mainly for less academically inclined persons, some students have developed look worm attitude towards sports. With this study, it is hoped that it will help to redirect the minds of the people on the benefits of sports participation on academic excellence. The study itself will help to motivate more participation in sports by students and academicians alike. Also, it is hoped that, the study will be a useful reference to further research on sports performance

Scope of the study

As already noted, the work will focus on sports participation and academic performance as it relates to the Ezza community, the attempt by the various schools in Ezza Local Government Area, as it relates to sport participation and academic performance will be examined.

Research Questions

Due to the fact that most people see  sports as a leisure time activity and not a contributor to academics. Certain questions need to be asked in order to achieve the aim of this research work. Those questions include:

  1. Does student participation in sporting activities hinder academic performance?
  2. Do students who participate in sports have no time to attend classes?
  3. Does participation in sports expose students to anti social activities like drug usage which are inimical to mental activities?
  4. Are there any significant differences between academic performance of athletes and non- athletes?
  5. Does sport participation and practicals reduce students energies to pursue their academic work?

Hypothesis

  1. The major hypothesis in this research is that student participation in sporting activities does not significantly hinder academic performance. The hypothesis is further supported by the following sub-hypotheses:-
    • Those students who participate in sport do not significantly have time to attend classes. Therefore cannot perform significantly in their examinations.
    • Participation in sports does not significantly expose students to anti social activities like drug usage which are inimical to mental activities.
    • There is no significant difference between academic performance of athletes and non athletes.
    • Sports participation and practicals do not significantly reduce students energies for to pursue their academic work.
