Strategies for improving the provision and utilization of teaching facilities in teaching electrical installation in technical colleges in Ebonyi state

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Electrical installation is a special course or subject area incorporated in the curriculum for electrical installation and maintenance practices. Electrical installations provide the appropriate means of connecting the consumer’s apparatus to the electricity supply (Bello, 2004).The environment in which the teaching/ learning would take place must also be conducive. Puyate (2004) pointed out that effective study of electrical installation in technical colleges would not be possible without adequate arrangements for the provision of required instructional facilities. This indicates that the availability and effective utilization of teaching facilities for the study of electrical installation in any technical college enhances skills acquisition. Effective study also empowers students to be productive and contribute positively to the development of Nigeria.

Inadequate facilities for teaching/ learning of electrical installation have been observed by a number of scholars in vocational education: some noted the gross inadequacy, unavailability and non functional state of the facilities (Ezeji, 2003). Others observed the out dated nature of the installed machines and the lack of proper maintenance culture to promote life expectancy of the workshop facilities equipments and machines for enhancement of productive purposes (Puyate, 2004; Bello, 2004). This could however be attributed to  the fact that most of the essential tools,  equipment and the heavy machines used for instructional purposes  in technical colleges are imported product  and   consequently apart   from being scarce are certainly very expensive.

Electrical installation instruction in this study involves utilization of the infrastructural and other facilities in the workshops, laboratories, and studio.

This includes all the tools, equipment, machines, and consumable materials that are being used from time to time for effective study of electrical installation. These facilities are required to be available, adequate and functional in order to satisfy the needs of the curriculum. While these needs cannot be over emphasized for effective study to take place, Chado (2004) observed that many institutions that are offering electrical installation in Nigeria are experiencing gross inadequacy of facilities, and materials. This is a serious impediment to the effective study of electrical installation, since those that are available are either damaged, obsolete or out of use due to some reasons. Some of these reasons are attributed to lack of consumable materials and electricity supply for operating the machines and equipment. In a similar vein, Emah (2005) observed that the expendable materials required to be used together with the equipment and machines for practices and for carrying out student project in technical colleges programmes are lacking in schools thereby denying students and teachers the opportunity to use the facilities when required.

The global trends in teaching and learning of electrical installation now requires the use of computers and other related communication facilities which are not available in required quantity for use by the teachers, administrators and the  students in most Nigerian schools. The non-availability and inadequacy of appropriate facilities have restricted electrical installation technical college teachers from meeting the desired goals of the education system.

Statement of the problem

Efforts made by successive governments in the past to promote effective study of electrical installation in technical colleges such that teachers could impact the necessary skills on the students through practical demonstrations with teaching facilities has not yielded the desired results. Most technical colleges involved in preparing student to become self-reliant operate using damaged tools, obsolete tools, equipment and machineries coupled with inadequate qualified teachers, inadequate funding, poor maintenance culture, etc. (Bello, 2004) poor state of facilities restrict  positive inculcation of skills and competencies on the students. The adverse effect is the production of half-baked engineers, technicians, craftsmen, and vocational and technical education teachers (Oluteju, 2007). The study therefore, sought to assess the impediment to effective utilization of teaching facilities in teaching electrical installation in technical colleges in Ebonyi state. This is an attempt to offer useful opinions that would help in curtailing the menace.

Purpose of the study

The main purpose of the study is to determine the provision and utilization of teaching facilities in teaching electrical installation in technical colleges in Ebonyi state. Specifically the study sought to:

  • Determine the extent instructional materials are available for effective teaching of electrical installation in technical colleges.
  • Determine extent functional teaching materials are available for the teaching of electrical installation in technical colleges.
  • Determine the constraints in the provision and utilization of instructional materials in technical colleges.
  • Determine the strategies for improving the provision and utilization of teaching materials in teaching electrical installation in technical colleges.

Significance of the study

The findings of this will be beneficial to the curriculum planners, the teachers as the implementer of the curriculum, through this study; the teachers will also discover new ways and strategies of presenting the lesson on electrical installation via the finding of the study the teacher will also discover how practically oriented electrical installation is, than theories, utilizing instructional materials for effective teaching in the classroom and workshop. The result from this study will also help the government know what they ought to do, they will see their role in the area of promoting electrical installation teaching, provide enough electrical installation instructional materials, equipment and tools for practical exercise, teaching, sponsor student’s projects and field trip etc.

Research question

  1. What are the available instructional materials for effective Leaching of Electrical Installation?
  2. What are the functional teaching materials available for the teaching of Electrical Installation?
  3. what are the constants in the provision and utilization of instructional materials
  4. what are the strategies for improving the provision and utilization of teaching materials in electrical installation.

Scope of the study

The study is centered on improving the provision and utilization of teaching facilities in teaching Electrical Installation in Ebonyi state colleges which was also carried out in (3) three technical colleges in Ebonyi state namely:Government Technical College, Abakaliki.  Ehugbo College Afikpo, and folk technical college Ikwo. The research dwelt on the extent of availability, extent of functionality, the strategies for improving the provision and utilization of instructional materials in teaching electrical installation, and the constraint in the provision and utilization.
